The Washington Railway Engineering Society (W.A.R.E.S.) is a longstanding organization of professionals with an interest in railway design, construction, operation, and maintenance. It provides networking opportunities for its members and raises scholarship money for students majoring in railway engineering.

The 5,500 members that comprise AREMA include a diverse group of railway and transit engineers, consultants, contractors, suppliers, academicians, federal and state governmental employees and others, working together to further the AREMA Mission - the development and advancement of both technical and practical knowledge and recommended practices pertaining to the design, construction and maintenance of railway infrastructure.
