European freight rail giant rebrands as DB Cargo.

Posted by SmartRail World Staff on Mar 3, 2016

MEG cement train from Rüdersdorf to Regensburg Ost in Fürth (Bavaria) - Courtesy of DB.Deutsche Bahn's rail freight business has been renamed DB Cargo as part of a rebranding and reorganisation process for the German rail giant. All the companies in Germany and abroad that currently have "DB Schenker Rail" in their name will be integrated into the new naming structure by the end of 2016.

With around 5,000 freight trains and 4,200 customer sidings in Europe, DB Schenker offers its customers access to one of the world's largest rail networks and thus is the European leader in rail freight transport.

With around 114,000 freight cars and 3,400 locomotives, DB Cargo owns Europe's largest fleet train. With almost 34,000 staff in Europe, DB Cargo is the only company to offer rail transport from a single source throughout Europe to business customers regardless of their industry. For example with end-to-end freight transport on the North-South axis from Scandinavia to Italy through a joint venture with DB Schenker Scandinavia and a co-operation with Italian NORDCARGO. Or with a wide range of services on the East-West axis with DB Cargo UK, French subsidiary ECR and DB Schenker Polska.

Deutsche Bahn's rail business (specifically, its passenger and rail freight transport business units) were combined in the new Traffic and Transport Division in August 2015. "The aim is to improve the product portfolio and service quality we offer our customers," says Andreas Busemann, who heads the Sales department at DB Cargo, "and having the business units in the rail system partnering together will further that aim." Going forward, both passenger transport and rail freight transport will use the DB logo, which will serve as a visual reflection of that partnership. The logo change will also make DB's brand profile more straightforward and unite all its rail activities under a single brand.

In addition to the logo change, there has also been a structural one: rail and logistics activities have been separated in organizational terms. Global logistics will use "DB Schenker" going forward, while rail freight transport will use "DB Cargo." "Although we are separating our logistics and rail businesses from each other by name, we will of course continue to offer integrated rail transport and logistics services throughout Europe where it makes sense for the market and our customers," says Andreas Busemann.
